The city of York has excellent sports facilities, including a wide range of popular York spectator sports, such as rugby and cricket. There are also good sports facilities in York for participants, and these include golf clubs, central tennis courts, badminton courts, swimming pools, fitness centres and state-of-the-art gymnasiums. The local York newspapers provide a useful sports section which regularly lists daily and weekly local city sports events, which are held in and around the centre of York.

The River Ouse runs straight through the centre of York and is a particularly scenic spot for walking and cycling in York. There are also a number of pubs along the way, close to the riverside.
