York Travel and TransportThe city of York is well served by the public transport system, which includes an excellent network of buses and trains, providing York with good connections throughout England. York is located close to many other interesting towns, cities, tourist attractions and important landmarks, and many visitors in York also travel outside of the city of York, into the surrounding areas.

Renting a car is often the preferred method of transport for excursions from York and it is relatively easy to travel around the York area by car. There are a number of major roads situated on the outskirts of York, which provide fast and convenient routes when travelling both to and from York.

York is served by a number of airports, the closest and most convenient of which are Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBA), Newcastle International Airport (NCL) and Birmingham International Airport (BHX). London Airports, including London Heathrow Airport (LHR), London Gatwick Airport (LGW), London Stansted Airport (STN) and London City Airport (LCY) are also within easy travelling distance of Bath, by either train, coach or car.

York Travel and Transport: York Travel by Foot - York, England
York is particularly well pedestrianized and one of the best ways to travel around York is on foot. This is a good way to see some of York's numerous tourist attractions, museums, art galleries and monuments. Finding your way around York city centre is straightforward and many of the York's major sights and tourist attractions are within easy walking distance of each other.

With bus stops located throughout York, the bus system in York covers the city well. Buses in the York area are well used by both tourists and locals in York, providing a very inexpensive and convenient way to travel around York and the surrounding towns. Bus passes are available in York and these can provide good value when travelling in York. Many local and regional buses leave from outside York Train Station. The York Travel Bus Information Centre has comprehensive bus schedule information and sells both local and regional bus tickets.

York also has an excellent national coach service and this is operated by National Express. Tickets for coaches in York can be purchased at the Tourist Information Centres and coaches in York travel to a large number of destinations, including Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds and London. National Express coaches in York depart from outside York Train Station.

Open in 1877, York Train Station is spectacular masterpiece of Victorian engineering, which was once the largest train station in Europe. This large, curving building is built from a mixture of brick, glass and iron and is over a quarter of a mile long. York Train Station is well served by trains and there are regular train services that travel to London's King's Cross (2 hours 10 minutes), Edinburgh (2 hours 30 minutes), Peterborough (1 hour 50 minutes), Birmingham (2 hours 30 minutes), and numerous other destinations, including Cambridge, East Anglia, Manchester, the south-west of England and Wales. Advance seat reservations on York trains can be booked if required.

There are a number of different taxi companies operating in the York area and it is possible to large six-seater taxis and also mini-buses if required. Taxis in York are one of the most convenient ways to travel around the York area and are not uniform in colour, although all York taxis display a prominent taxi sign on the roof. Usually reasonably priced, taxis in York can either be hailed in the street or at one of York's many taxi ranks, such as Duncombe Place Taxi Rank, Piccadilly Taxi Rank, St. Saviourgate Taxi Rank, Exhibition Square Taxi Rank or outside of York Train Station. In quieter areas of York, taxis can be ordered by telephone and there are numerous reputable taxi firms that your hotel can recommend. There are often additional taxi charges made for luggage, travel late at night, extra passengers and travel on public holidays in York.

Bicycles are a popular way to travel around recreational areas of York in particular, and much of York is flat, although there are some steep hills in the suburbs of York. There are also a number of excellent cycle trails and pathways throughout central York, next to the River Ouse, which is particularly scenic. York has a number of bicycle rental shops available in York city centre.
